Getting a clean edge: sanding, dampening and burnishing
A burnished edge is the difference between handmade and homemade. The process is simple and almost entirely about patience.

Why edges matter
The edge is where the cut fibres are exposed, and it is the first place a piece looks unfinished. On veg-tan, those fibres can be compressed and polished into a smooth, sealed surface. Done properly it is durable as well as attractive, because a sealed edge resists dirt and moisture far better than a raw one.
Start with the cut
No amount of burnishing rescues a ragged cut. A single confident pass with a sharp blade against a straight edge beats several tentative ones, which leave steps that have to be sanded out. If you are cutting curves, a round knife or a sharp craft blade taken slowly will produce a cleaner line than scissors ever will.
Bevel before you sand
An edge beveller removes the sharp corner from both faces, which rounds the profile and gives you something to burnish. Skipping this step is why some edges refuse to go smooth: a square edge has two corners that keep catching. Match the beveller size to the leather thickness.
Sanding in stages
Work from a coarser grit to a finer one, around 220 up through 400 and 600. The aim is to level the edge, not to remove material. Sand along the edge rather than across it, and check the profile by eye every few passes. Most edge problems are visible before they are permanent.
Water, gum tragacanth or wax
Dampening the edge slightly is what lets the fibres compress. Plain water works. Gum tragacanth and commercial edge slickers add a binder that helps hold the finish. Wax adds a final polish and some water resistance. Many makers use water for the first pass and wax for the last.
The burnishing itself
A wooden or canvas slicker rubbed briskly along the damp edge generates the friction and heat that compresses the fibres. Speed matters more than pressure. You will feel the edge change from soft to hard under the tool. Stop when it stops improving rather than continuing out of habit.
Why chrome-tan will not do this
Chrome-tanned edges will not compress and polish the same way, because the fibres behave differently. The standard answer there is edge paint applied in thin coats and dried between them. Attempting to burnish chrome-tan usually produces a fuzzy edge and a lot of wasted time.
Common mistakes
Too much water swells the fibres and leaves a rough edge when it dries. Too much pressure with a slicker can roll the edge over. Skipping grits leaves scratches that only show once the edge is polished. All three are recoverable if caught early, which is another reason to check frequently.
Practising cheaply
This is the technique that most rewards practice on offcuts. A remnant pack gives you a supply of edges to ruin at no meaningful cost, and the muscle memory transfers directly. Ten minutes on scrap before starting a project is a reliable way to avoid learning on the piece that matters.
How this applies when you are buying
Leather weight is quoted in ounces, where one ounce is roughly 1/64 inch. Light 2-3oz leather folds and stitches easily and suits linings, wallets and bag panels. Heavy 8-9oz holds a tooled impression and is what belts, holsters and sheaths are cut from. If a listing states a weight, it is the manufacturer figure.
Pre-cut panels and sheets in known sizes, from lightweight lining leather up to heavy tooling weights. Buying a cut panel means you know exactly what arrives, which matters when the piece has to come out at a specific dimension.
